Why won’t my garage door open?

September 21, 2026

If your garage door won’t open, the most common causes include dead remote or keypad batteries, a broken spring, a problem with the garage door opener, or a door that has come off its track. Check for these problems first

  • The opener isn’t getting power. Check the opener’s lights, power outlet, and circuit breaker. If the opener has no power, resetting the breaker or plugging it into a working outlet may solve the problem.
  • The garage door opener isn’t working properly. If the opener makes a sound but the door doesn’t move, the drive or another internal component may need repair.
  • The garage door spring is broken. A broken spring can prevent the opener from lifting the door. You may hear a loud snap when a spring breaks, or you may notice a visible gap in the spring. A door with a broken spring can also feel unusually heavy if you try to lift it manually.
  • The door is off its track. If the door looks crooked or you can see that one or more rollers have come out of the track, don’t force the door open. A door that is off track may require professional repair.
  • The remote or keypad isn’t working. Try operating the door with the wall button. If the wall button works, the problem may be the remote or external keypad batteries. Replace the batteries and try again. If the remote or keypad still doesn’t work, its programming may need to be reset. Check your owner’s manual for reprogramming instructions.

Garage doors are heavy, and their springs, cables, tracks, and other components can be under significant tension. Use caution around your garage door and don’t attempt repairs involving springs or cables without experience.
